When founded in 1845, Portland nestled along the west bank of the Willamette River not far from its confluence with the Columbia River. This ocean connection made Portland an attraction to New England seafarers and traders. Today, Portland’s character reflects its New England merchant roots and it has emerged as a distinctive West Coast city.
